Children and Youth Activities
Parents for Active School Travel (PAST)
April 5 2024
Focus: Promoting and supporting Active School Travel
What:
In Partnership with schools 🡪 implement actions that directly facilitate active school travel.
Advocate for Safe Walking and Rolling Infrastructure 🡪 We promote city/community engagement opportunities for urban development that support active school travel.
Education and Awareness 🡪 Benefits of physical activity for youth
How: Liaise with SD73 District PAC Transportation Committee and Parent Advisory Councils, KCC, Principals and Vice Principles, Neighborhood Associations
Why: Today’s “backseat generation” of children is more often driven to school. Active school travel can contribute up to 30% of recommended daily physical activity, and parents are considered ‘gatekeepers’ of children’s travel mode decisions (Mah et al., 2017). While we focus on changes to the built environment including neighborhood safety, we also aim to involve parents and youth in the planning process.
Reach out through KCC for more information or how to get involved!
